Aftercare & Relapse Prevention

Finishing a program is the beginning, not the end. Every Forrest client leaves with a written plan, a step-down path, and people to call.

Why aftercare matters

The months after intensive treatment are when new habits either take root or get crowded out by old routines. Research on both substance use and mood disorders is consistent: people who stay connected to care after a structured program do better than people who stop abruptly. That’s why aftercare planning at Forrest starts in your first week, not your last.

What your aftercare plan includes

A step-down path

Most clients move from Day Treatment to IOP, then to Outpatient, so support tapers gradually instead of ending all at once.

Recognizing early warning signs

Relapse rarely starts with a drink or a skipped medication. It usually starts weeks earlier with small changes: sleeping less, skipping meetings or appointments, isolating, romanticizing the past, or telling yourself you’ve got it handled. Part of your plan is naming these signs in advance so you and the people around you can act early. A setback is information, not failure, and coming back to a higher level of care for a short time is a sign of strength.
